For the first time in the history of the Grand National, a new trophy will be designed on a yearly basis under a five-year sponsorship deal with global diagnostics company Randox Health.
While the new trophy will be fully unveiled in mid-February, 24 January marks the final step of the 2017 design, with its hallmarking at the Goldsmiths’ Company Assay Office.
Entries are now open for the inaugural Fairtrade Gold Design Awards. This is an exciting new award created by ethical jeweller Ingle & Rhode and supported by the Fairtrade Foundation which aims to raise awareness of Fairtrade gold amongst new designers whilst also helping to identify and promote up-and-coming talent.
Date letter S signifies 2017.
The inclusion of the date letter in the hallmark started in 1478 (the same year the Assay Office was founded).
It is now a non-compulsory element of the hallmark, but we apply it as standard in our Full Traditional Hallmark. The date letter changes annually on January 1st. The font, case, and shield shape all change so each can only indicate one specific year. All date punches are destroyed at the end of the year.
