Annual UK Hallmarking Figures for 2017

The total number of articles sent for hallmarking at all UK offices in 2017 fell by 4.3% to 9,335,765. 

Platinum, gold and palladium saw a decline in the quantity of articles hallmarked, but silver saw an increase.

Q&A with Kate Hainge, Make Your Mark Awards 2016 Prize Winner

Kate Hainge was awarded the second prize in the Jewellery category at the Make Your Mark Awards 2016 for her Magnifying Ring design. One of the prizes was a mentorship with esteemed British jewellery designer Stephen Webster, who has been designing and making jewellery for more than 40 years. After starting out in the jewellery industry as an apprentice in London’s Hatton Garden, the Stephen Webster brand is now known the world over for its bold design style while celebrating traditional craftsmanship.

Annual Punch Grind

It was a case of rise and grind for two members of the Court of Assistants who joined us in our workshop this month.  

Previous Prime Warden Michael Galsworthy and Arthur Drysdale helped to grind the date letters from punches which remained from 2016 and bore the corresponding date letter "r".

New Superintendent Assayer

Will Evans is the new Superintendent Assayer at the Goldsmiths' Company Assay Office.  He has worked at the Assay Office since 2000 moving from the laboratory through the roles of Process Development Engineer, Systems Development Manager and Technical Manager.  Naturally then, technical development, and process improvement have been inherent in his work priorities, and they continue to be his focus in his new role.

Verdict of the Pyx

Today marked the conclusion of the Trial of the Pyx 2017.  The Verdict was read to the jury by the Clerk of the Goldsmiths' Company. The Queen's Remembrancer was in attendance at Goldsmiths' Hall.  

Since February, the Laboratory Team at the Assay Office have been testing a random selection of coins which were brought to us for analysis by The Royal Mint. Representatives of the Goldsmiths' Company and Assay Office declared their findings at the Verdict.
